Sam’s Hill

Coming 5/2/25

Huge thanks to Pat Keen (bass), Paul Brandt (keys), Courtney Hartman (electric guitar), JT Bates (drums), and Shane Leonard (producer) for lending their talents bringing this old tune back to life. What a joy it has been to make music with friends—new and old.

Sam’s Hill’ has been around for about 25 years—first written after moving back home to the Driftless and realizing the magic I’d taken for granted as a kid.

Originally recorded on an 8-track MiniDisc as part of the debut collection, Comfortably Lost in Greenfield Vol. 1. It has remained a steadfast go-to, and now feels more at home than ever—fitting like a glove to the life we’ve built here.

There is a fire that’s been  burning just over the way

it’s made of stone thoughts left without a trace

I believe it all dropped from the heavens

I’m just glad that it didn’t hit me

and it all can be seen on top of Sam’s hill

All those dirt roads that’ll lead you to nowhere

and they’ll wind up your mind to just about anywhere

there’s all those corn cribs and barn ribs to feed your eyes

on a country Sunday I think I like this

and it all can be seen on top of Sam’s hill

I’m going to climb right on top and rid me of this

rest my head rest my head legs over that ledge

I am sailing on an ocean in the middle of Greenfield

gazing at all I see free as I want to be

and it all can be seen on top of Sam’s hill
